Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
