Senate Greenlights Measure to Make Public Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a reversal by the president and his GOP allies. The administration changed course after months of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The measure next will be sent to Donald Trump for his signature. The president indicated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although Trump has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with victims and their representatives who were present in a viewing area, cheered after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from Clay Higgins, who stated he feared the measure would reveal specific data of people, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
