A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
